Milestones
We invite you to journey through the history of Planai-Hochwurzen-Bahnen GmbH and will showcase its most important milestones.
PIONIERS and ZEITGEIST
| The first development of the ski mountains Planai and Hochwurzen. While the Schladming pioneers had plans for many lift and cable railway projects in their heads after the Second World War, there were little funds available to realise them. The ski scene of the 1950s took place primarily in Rohrmoos. | |
| 1949 | The first chair lift began operations in December. The single chair lift was able to bring 100 persons an hour from Maistadt to Rohrmoos (GH Moser). |
| The Rohrmoos chair lift was used so frequently that it sparked the ingenuity of the local population. The brothers Franz and Gottl Schütter began to operate their first tow lift. | |
| 1953 | Heinz Weichsler constructed the first tow lift on the top of the Planai. |
| 1957 | The first sledge lift was opened at Kainspieß. |
| Climbing the Mountains with the Ski Bus The large-scale cable railway projects initially remained only in the heads of the visionaries. Building roads had to come first. | |
| 1960 | Governor Josef Krainer officially opened the Hochwurzen High Road on 9 September. The Hochwurzen FIS route became the new ski attraction in Styria the following winter. |
| 1961 | The route was expanded by 25 metres. Franz Tritscher and his team completed the levelling work by hand. |
| 1963 | The tracks for the future of the Planai were laid. The decisive initiative came from the founding of IG-Fastenberg, a combination of representatives from the communities of Rohrmoos, Schladming and the Forestry Association of Fastenberg. The goal was the construction of an alpine road on the Planai and the construction of a ski route. Mayor Harald Laurich, Sepp Kraiter (chairman of IG-Fastenberg) and Willi Plut (chairman of the 35 property owners of the forestry association) were the leaders of the inexhaustible pioneers. |
| 1964 | The construction of the Planai toll road began. It became one of the most heavily travelled alpine roads in Austria after its completion in 1965. The toll income was used primarily to cover road maintenance costs. |
| Private initiatives during the beginning of the 1960s resulted in multiple sled lifts in Rohrmoos and the “Wirtsleitn – Lift” at what is now the finish line of the Planai ski route. | |
| The construction of the ski runs began parallel to the construction of the Planai road. The FIS run on the Planai was completed in 1966. The Schladming piste pioneers Sepp Streicher and engineer Sepp Kraiter made a name for themselves while constructing the pistes. | |
| 1966 | Commercial ski operations started in December and the transportation was conducted using buses – bumpy, cramped and damp but always a good time! Up to 35 buses were used in shuttle service to bring skiers to the Planai in the years before the cable railway was opened. |
| The first piste preparation work was done with a special invention, a converted Ferguson tractor, created by Hans Plut and the brothers Toni and Rudi Stocker. | |
| 1967 | The Planai-Hochwurzen ski pass was introduced. |
| 1968 | The first Ratrac piste groomer was purchased. |
| 1970 | The shareholders agreement was concluded on 9 July and the company “Planai-Bahn GmbH” was founded on 29 July at the Schladming city hall. |
| 1971 | The construction of a double chair lift and a gondola lift were approved after a thorough economic review. |
| 1972 | saw the Schladming dream of many years come true. The 4-seat gondola lift with a length of 3,356 metres and an altitude difference of 1,080 metres began operating. |
| 1973 | The double chair lift Lärchkogel and the Lärchkogel ski run were completed. |
| 1974 | The Fastenberg lift began operating, making the eastern side of the Planai accessible. |
| 1976 | Weitmoos was opened by the “Weitmooslift GesmbH & CoKg”, which entered our company as a shareholder. In the same year, Interessengemeinschaft Planai merged with Planai-Bahn, transferring the responsibility for the pistes and streets to Planai-Bahn. The opening of the Mitterhaus area, the overpasses and the Kessler overpass were started in the following years. The foundation was already laid back then to create to connection to the neighbouring Hauser Kaibling. |
| 1977 | The opening of the Mitterhaus area, with the help of a sled lift, was very important for the Planai & Hochwurzen Bahnen GmbH. This made a generous, nearly tree-free area with guaranteed snow available for skiers. |
| 1979 | The first steps were brought to shining close with the purchase of the Weichsler lift. A merger with the “Hochwurzen-Bahn” created today’s Planai-Hochwurzen Bahnen GmbH. |
| The connection of the ski mountains Planai and Hochwurzen was completed with the construction of the double chair lifts Planai West I and II. The first tunnel chair lift in the world (Planai West I) was constructed to prevent costly rock erosion. | |
| 1980 | saw the construction of the double chair lift Rohrmoos I in place of the already closed single chair lift “Moserboden”. This allowed the construction of the Planai-Rohrmoos Ski Swing and an approach to Rohrmoos. At the same time, the Alpenhoflift was purchased and the long-term lease of the Schwaiger and Schütter lifts in Rohrmoos. |
| A merger with the bus company of the Rohrmoos-Untertal community in 1980 transforms the Planai-Hochwurzen-Bahnen GmbH into a significant bus company, which provides regular service as well as international bus service. The entire lift and cable railway system on the mountains of Planai, Hochwurzen and Rohrmoos were placed under the management of the Planai-Hochwurzen-Bahnen at the end of 1980. | |
| In addition, the coupleable three chair lift Planai III was constructed. Planai III was built as the first basement train station in the world in order to minimise the building size as much as possible. | |
| The path from Märchenwiese to the north slope was opened with the construction of the Lärchkogel south lift. | |
| The second sled lift in the Mitterhaus area was constructed (Mitterhaus Lift II). | |
| 1981 | The construction of the double chair lift Rohrmoos II in 1981 fulfilled a wish of many years for the Schladming and Rohrmoos tourist industry, as this 1,400 metre railway strengthened Hochwurzen as a popular family and ski training area. |
| An efficient funicular – the Planai Funicular (6 person gondola) – was completed just in time for the beginning of the winter season 1985/86. | |
| 1988 | The Planai Hochwurzen Bahnen expanded their offerings in Märchenwiese in December 1988 with a button lift – Weitmoos II, constructed parallel to the existing sled lift. |
| 1990 | The fall of 1990 was full of the construction of new lifts on Hochwurzen and Planai alike. Gipfelbahn Hochwurzen, a cable railway with 5 gondolas, was certainly the highlight. The four chair lift Burgstallalm was also an important part of the investments. |
| 1994 | A four chair lift replaced the double chair lift in Lärchkogel. |
| 1997 | An additional track is added on Hochwurzen, which, together with the renovations of the snowmaking system, amounts to an investment volume of 120 million schillings. |
| 1998 | Realisation of the Schladming 4-Mountain Ski Swing The connection between Hochwurzen and Pichl was completed in 1998 with the 4-mountain ski swing. At the same time, the six chair lift Rohrmoos II was constructed in Rohrmoos. |
| 2001 | Founding of the largest Austrian tariff association: 23 Salzburg and Styrian cable railway companies, including Planai-Hochwurzen-Bahnen, merged under the name Ski amadé in order to be able to compete together on the international market in the future and to provide their guests the widest alpine offer in Europe. |
| 2002 | Planai-Bahnen invested an additional € 7.2 million. The largest chair lift in the region was constructed at Fastenberg, a coupleable 6 chair lift – the Planai 6er. |
| 2003 | Acquisition of the Dachstein Tourisumus AG facilities on the Dachstein Glacier by Planai-Hochwurzen-Bahnen. |
| 2003 | Construction of electrical supply facilities for the Hunerkogel mountain station, new construction on the Austriascharten lift and replacement of the Hunerkogel lift on the Dachstein Glacier. |
| 2004 | Renovation of the material rail; renovation of the Dachstein southern wall rail for electric drives, electrification of the Schladming lift and the Mitterstein chair lift. |
| 2004 | Acquisition of Galsterbergalm: Galsterbergalm will now be operated by Planai-Hochwurzen-Bahnen in Schladming. |
| 2006 | Construction of the 8 car cableway “Golden Jet”: The connection between Planai and Hochwurzen is now even more comfortable. |
| 2008 | The Dachstein Glacier Restaurant is operated by Planai-Hochwurzen-Bahnen starting at the beginning of the summer season 2008. Ms. Gundi Pachernegg from Schladming is responsible for this division of the company. Her new motivated team brings not only brio to the highest restaurant in Styria, but fresh air to the food and drink assortment on the mountain as well. |
| 2008 | After the motto chair, chair, chair, gondola, the first so-called Telemix lift, the "Sun Jet" was constructed on Hochwurzen. This special lift features 3 chairs followed by a gondola, all using the same cable rail system. |
| 2008 | The most modern parking garage in Austria was constructed – Parkhaus Planai. It is completely free of columns, flooded with light and allows skiers to travel in from the pistes on every individual storey. |
| 2009 | Leadership Change on Planai: An era came to an end on 30 June 2009 on the Planai! Long-time chief executive and founding shareholder KoR Dir. Albert Baier placed the future of the company in the hands of Ernst Trummer after nearly 40 years. Planai-Bahnen grew under Albert Baier from a small operation in the 1970s to one of the large, most well-known cable railway companies in the entire alpine region. |
| 2009 | Planai-Bahnen builds the 8 chair lift “Märchenwiese” in Styria this year. The journey from Planai-Märchenwiese to the peak at 1,906 metres above sea level will be especially comfortable. Additional investments of more than € 16 million are made this year to extend the ski routes and upgrade the snowmaking system. |
| 2010 | The planning work for the new "Multifunctional Valley Station Centre” (working title) are already moving at top speed. A service deck below the stadium parking lot will also be constructed. |
| 2013 | Schladming will be the broadcast location for the Alpine Ski World Cup 2013. The preparations for this important event are already underway. |
