Sustainability begins with concrete actions – and at Planai-Hochwurzen-Bahnen, we are resolutely moving forward in this area. The use of HVO, a fossil-free fuel, represents an impressive step forward for the environment and climate. The CO₂ savings? Up to 90% – a real milestone on the road to greater climate protection.
From idea to implementation: HVO put to the test
How did it all begin? With a scientific study. In the winter of 2022/23, Thomas Klein Consulting GmbH investigated the practical suitability of HVO on the Planai. Two identical snow groomers were tested – one with conventional diesel, the other with palm oil-free HVO. The focus was on performance, efficiency and emission reduction. The result? Clear: HVO not only protects the climate, but also performs well in daily operation.
Complete switch to HVO
Based on these convincing results, the complete switch to HVO took place in winter 2023/24. This affects not only the snow groomers at Planai, Hochwurzen and Galsterberg, but also company vehicles, coaches and most of the public buses. A total of 1.1 million litres of the sustainable fuel has now been ordered for the upcoming 2024/25 season – clear proof that sustainability is a top priority here.
What exactly is HVO?
HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil) is produced from waste and residual materials such as used vegetable oils and animal fats. The fuel is synthetic but structurally identical to fossil diesel. Important: We only use palm oil-free HVO.
A significant step in the right direction

This decision really makes a significant difference.’
